A Turkish naval ship arrived at Mogadishu Port this Tuesday following the recent signing of a defense and economic pact with Somalia. The TCG Kınalıada F514, docking two months after this landmark agreement, underscores Turkey’s commitment to bolster maritime security for Somalia.
The welcoming ceremony saw the presence of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, several government ministers, and Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş. President Mohamud praised Turkey as a steadfast ally, expressing gratitude for the defense pact which he believes will strengthen Somalia’s naval capabilities.
Somalia’s Defense Minister, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, mentioned that the agreement reflects strong bilateral ties and includes economic and military components, with more initiatives planned under this framework.
Ambassador Aktaş emphasized Turkey’s dedication to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating that Somalia’s stability is integral to Turkey’s security.
The relationship between the two nations was further solidified last month with an additional agreement on offshore oil and natural gas cooperation, following the defense deal. Turkey has been a significant supporter of Somalia, investing in various sectors including education, infrastructure, and health, and providing substantial humanitarian aid.
