The Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, which surveyed 180 nations, placed Somalia at the bottom of the list.Terrorism, the restriction of press freedom, political, social, and economic instability, and the suppression of freedom of speech have all contributed to the flourishing of the vice in the nation in the Horn of Africa, where the never-ending conflict is still the most significant factor in the rampant corruption that has been observed there.”Corruption makes it harder for governments to protect people and damages public confidence, making it harder to control security threats. However, conflict undermines governments’ efforts to combat corruption and creates opportunities for it, according to the survey.
Why Somalia is the most corrupt nation in the world? Despite having the worst drought in 40 years and consistently experiencing extreme poverty, Somalia has created an environment where corruption thrives, making it unattractive to relief food agencies. Because they facilitate misrule, the resulting dysfunctional institutions bear the majority of the blame for the ongoing corruption.
Corruption persists because there are no regulatory mechanisms in place to address the issue. Corruption practically permeates the regime in Somalia. The scourge continues unabated throughout its judicial system, public services, administration, police, tax and customs administration, legislation, natural resources, public procurement, and civil society.
Leaders can simultaneously combat corruption and promote peace. According to the report, Daniel Eriksson, CEO of Transparency International, “governments must open space to include the public in decision-making—from activists and business owners to marginalized communities and young people.” Mohamed Abdullahi Mohammed, the former president of Somalia, suspended the country’s prime minister at the time, Mohamed Hussein Roble, in December 2021 because of corruption and the misuse of land. Then, in May 2022, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was re-elected as the country’s president despite receiving widespread criticism for massive corruption, media restrictions, and abuse of power during his previous term.
